The most basic way to do mindful breathing is to focus your attention on your breath, the inhale and exhale.
When kids are in the middle of a tantrum, anxiety, or just heighten arousal and their fight/flight/freeze response is in full gear, their ability to think, communicate and remember information is reduced. Research shows that when we help children breathe in a slow and controled manner, their heart rate, breathing rate, muscle tension reduces, which allows them to calm down and manage their strong emotions in a positive way.
